About the Doctor

I was initially inspired to study naturopathic medicine over 20 years ago. The first naturopathic doctor I met was Dr. Christoph Kind at his practice near my hometown on Vancouver Island. He explained the principles of naturopathic medicine to me while treating his patients. It was a remarkable experience. At that time, I had already been on a long road with my own personal health concerns. When Dr. Kind showed me the approach of naturopathic medicine, I knew it was my calling. I found my new career path intensely gripping. From that point my passion for my work has only increased. I feel lucky that I had the support of my family and friends, and that I had the time to make a career change. I truly enjoy my work.

The path to active practice was challenging and rewarding. Initially I pursued microbiology and biochemistry at the University of Victoria before I was accepted to naturopathic medical school. In total it takes 8 years of study to attain a naturopathic medical degree. After taking the intense, day long board examinations I was able to see patients of my own. When I started practice, I felt that I was ready. In fact, the first 4 years of practice were humbling. Dr. Kind accepted me to his practice and was a great mentor. He revealed the difference between written knowledge and the art of medicine that comes from thousands of hours of experience with patients. Today, I have now seen thousands of patients and spent tens of thousands of hours doing my best to help.

While I do feel that I have become a better doctor, I have also become more comfortable with knowing that a doctor can never know enough, and he or she must continue to look for new solutions for every patient. Every person is unique, our bodies are as complex as our minds and the medicines, therapies, and treatments are constantly evolving and seeming endless.

If you choose to see me you can expect me to be honest, ethical, and open with you. I will meet you where you are at. I have been told that I am an informal doctor and intense. If you hire me to help you with your health, you will find me to be intently focused on you and your concerns.

You will not leave my office with lots of pills. I carry very few medicines in my office for practical and ethical reasons. I believe that patients need a plan that they understand, that addresses the issues that they would like to address, and a plan that will work for them.

Sincerely,

Dr. Toby Bridgman, Naturopathic Doctor.
